I have been unable to create new paths when using track viewer in the most recent unstable version of OR. The dialogue box opens, but before I can finish typing a path name the track viewer closes.

Hello,
I have the same problem. The latest version that works for me is Open Rails U2023.11.07-0952 2023-11-07. From Open Rails version U2023.11.16-1308 2023-11 what darwins describes happens.
I have one more problem that I don't know when it happened.
This is an image from Open Rails version T1.5.1-799_U2024.01.26-0523 where some platform names and markers are not displayed.

This is an image from version 1.5.1 stable and all platform names and markers are shown.

I use an older version of TrackViewer for the same reason, which is easy with several OpenRails versions running in parallel.
In newer versions, all event points of all activities are also displayed, this probably causes a memory management problem. If only a single activity is available to the TrackViewer, all station names should be visible, otherwise individual siding names will also be invisible.
Greetings Hehl

Recommend linking your OR trackviewer shortcut to the "Contrib.TrackViewer.exe" in the most recent stable version -- currently 1.5. That's my practice and I've never had a problem.

I reported the same as well in the "it's a bug" forum as well as the display not properly maximizing when the program is first opened.
The best workaround for now is using track viewer from the stable version. The unstable is called as such for that reason after all.
