Hi there

In another post Bernard said

... i have a common ORTS Trainset folder where every piece of rolling stock and locomotives is stored so that i only have 1 place to go to update stuff, yet all of them are available to any route, by just putting the consist in the consist folder of that route...

I'm curious about the "consist folder of that route" and how this can be set up. I've always felt that the .con files should be a folder within the applicable route instead of a folder within the Trains folder.

I've looked through the Open Rails manual (dated December 2023) and done a search of the forum here but can't find any mention of this.

Can someone give an example of the necessary folder structure and any requirements within the .con file needed to accomplish this, or a link to a thread on Elvas.

Thanks

Bert

That can only work with mini routes.

I have several mini routes set up from my MSTS days and in each mini route the consist folder is under the Trains folder.

What I'm interested in is Bernard's comment about consists being in a consist folder of a route.

I have a trainset folder from heII.
It has most of the stuff I've downloaded over the years. It is unmanageable.
A few years ago I had to do something so I created a trains/trainset folder with only the stuff I deem worthy, not the UP boxcar from 2002 with square wheels, etc.
I use a little tool called Link Shell Extension

To put a link to these, or any other, folders in any of the six msts/orts setups I've got going.
You could link the trainset and or consists and or trains with any install you want.
Here's what it looks like with the shapes and textures folders.

When you need to just delete the link.

Hope this helps.

Randy

Yes, under the trains folder.

Mini-routes are just an isolated installation. The folder structure is identical, with an isolated copy of GLOBAL and TRAINS with the applicable subfolders.

Probably a good time for someone to write a up a ORTS Specific MiniRoute Tutorial since OR makes it a LOT easier than MSTS.

typo I meant in the trains/consist folder of a mini route, calling the items in the consist from a single common location that is not in the mini route

Thanks for confirming this Bernard.

My gut told me this was the case.

There's a OR miniroute procedure?

Nice, haven't seen any info on this though
