I have 44 different engines that I use in Player consists. I have adjusted the notch value in the engine controllers in these engines so each notch gives a desired certain speed.
I still run Open Rails version T1.4-55-g04375e66f.
Why?
Because every time I have updated to a newer version the running speed for each notch has changed dramatic.
Are there any explanation for this as I dont want to have to change engine controllers in 44 engines for each update

Hello.

You can see changes list on OR.org site for learning other potential reasons.

It is my understanding that each notch provides a desired power-not speed to traction motors. Besides various other sources, this is described in the manual in the section pertaining to the ORTS Diesel Engine Definition. This applies to a diesel-electric locomotive, perhaps it is different for an electric -- my assumption is that it's not.

It's definitely so.
For precise speed maintaining the more complex systems needed, which are cruise control.
While basic ones determine (and quite rough) only power input (output will vary)
