On first installation this version worked.

I saved and tried to resume the save (with a small change to eng files) this failed to resume - some changes may require to start again from the beginning.

Subsequently trying to start again from the beginning - OR crashes.

Then trying with other trains and other routes - these also seem to crash the sim.

So now off to reinstall or install another version.

This looks like you have mixed DLLs from different versions. Please try a fresh Unstable version to see if that fixes the problem.

If I put the same version into a clean folder, I still can't resume from a save. When I try that it crashes and leaves RunActivity.exe running in the background. If I close RunActivity.exe manually then I can start another train or another route.

I cannot replicate your issue. I still believe there's a problem with your RunActivity.exe. The error report is complaining about things that do not exist anymore in the unstable source code. I don't know if it's something on your side or the Unstable release not compiling correctly.

In particular, Orts.Viewer3D.InfoDisplay.PrepareFrame does not contain any reference to LocomotiveAxle (as it was changed to LocomotiveAxles), and Viewer.cs:line 855 is blank.
