Hello everyone,

I recently downloaded and installed the most recent version of Open Rails "Stable".

I noticed a few changes under the "options" tab. I'm thinking this is no big deal here, or is it?

I have noticed that I am getting hit with the msg on the screen saying, "Car 0-??? derailed on the curve". As well as "coupler overload"

The couplers don't break, and the cars don't derail. Just wondering if anyone else is getting these messages.

Thanks

Kenny

Hi Kenny,

Always post the version number of OR, there are 4 different versions.

Please also post a log file of one of your runs where you have got the error messages.

Yes, such events only throw warnings on screen.
No actual derailments occur. It's developer's position.

Advanced Adhesion with Break Couplers checked...the couplers will break...and train will separate, emergency brakes will apply. I have tested this and it works. Check your option settings, or use Simple Adhesion.
Posting your OR log will show what options you are running with, members will be able to advise which to toggle on or off.

To add to what Derek said - from the path name and consist name it looks like you're running over the 4% grades of Lookout Pass with a 100 car train. In real life, the typical trains to run over Lookout Pass were only about 20 cars or less - and that was with older railcars that aren't as heavy as most of today's modern freight cars. They also only ran 4-axle diesels on Lookout Pass due to the tight curvature and light rail...

The coupler break message is because your train is way too heavy for that grade without having to spread the locomotives out throughout the train at 3 or even 4 locations. By spreading out the locomotives, the maximum coupler drawbar forces will be lower... although you may still have issues while going over the top of the pass unless you control the middle and rear locomotives separately (which is possible in ORTS)

The "car derailed on curve" messages are most likely a string-line / wheel climb derailment, by having too much train weight pulling to the inside of very tight curves. Lookout Pass not only has very steep grades, but very tight curves. This can also be mitigated by spreading out the locomotives throughout the train... but in reality, if you want to be "realistic", you should be running much shorter trains over Lookout Pass.

As of right now, if you turn on the Break Couplers option in the ORTS menu, your train will break in two when the coupler force is exceeded. Derailments have not yet been fully implemented at this time, but it is being discussed.

Thanks for the replies.

I have ran trains like this for several years like this "heavy". I've never seen the derail warning before. This 100-car train will make it over lookout pass. I think back to my real-life railroading days as a conductor on the Pokey division, Norfolk and Western, Norfolk Southern. They ran heavy coal trains. There was kind of a rule about "rocking speed", 8 to 11 mph. They wanted the train to maintain a speed above this.

Derailments leave a lot to be desired in Open Rails! I pine for the MSTS days when you could play Silver Streak...
