Hi,

this is probably some major oversight on my side but I am having an issue with OpenRails client.

I downloaded the client, pointed it to the appropriate Content folder and tried to add some custom locomotives and/or carriages.
I downloaded and saved them into the TRAINS\Trainset\ folder as instructed.
Each locomotive folder has files with following extensions:

.eng
.s
.sd
.ace
.xml

Unfortunately, none of them show up in the list of available locomotives in the OpenRails client. (I was able to add a custom route though in the ROUTES folder.)

I know this might be little information to go on but I am wondering if I missed something fundamental as I see no reason why the client wouldn't recognize these files.
Any help is appreciated and sorry for the noob question.

Welcome to elvastower.

What program are you calling open rails client, what version?

If you just have open rails, there is no way to add rolling stock, you need some addons.

Hello and Welcome.
Did You made consists with that new rolling stock and placed these *.con-files into Consists folder?
If no consists - "Client" wouldn't know, how them have to be placed in game.
For more complex cases - try and analyse Your LOG.txt-file (turn logging on in Options) and if You can't interpret the problem's nature - post that file, attached to post here.

Hi ferus,
For any locomotive to show in Open Rails, you need to create a consist using it.

You can do this using the Consist Editor in TSRE5 (ConsistEditor.bat) or ConBuilder (free version cb249.zip from trainsim.com library) or Convoi from this site's library.

Cheers,
Ged

Hi,

thanks for the prompt replies.
I am using the Open Rails client from http://openrails.org/ in version 1.5.1.
I also have the Microsoft Train Simulator (if it is ever needed at some point).

I didn't make any consists. The webpage where I downloaded the locomotives didn't mention anything about that.

How can I make consists? Do I do it within the OR client?

EDIT: Or better yet, can you point me to some guide on how to set these things up?
The manuals and guides on the openrails.org mostly deal with already playing and controlling the game rather than the very basics.

First, Look for consist files in Your downloads.
If no, You can either write them by Yourself in text editor form scratch (what might be hard), copy&edit some existant *.con-files for them to refer to Your new stock, or (which is more comfort) - to use some of consist editing tools - which will show You results immediately, prevent syntax mistakes and will automate defining parameters&saving of out-files.

*.xml-files are out of use for these train simulators so far.

See Manual.pdf in installed ORTS pack. Can be called by clicking Button "Documents" on "client's" window.
No answer - feel free to Ask it Here.

Or, go there - You can search needed words in that latest version of Manual online:
https://open-rails.r...s.io/en/latest/

I see now. I do have some consist files from MSTS so I will try to check and see if I can edit them or search for some tools.
I didn't know this was a requirement for the trains to show up. Thank you for your help.

Using text editor for editing *.con-file(s), You only need to change NAMES ONLY of *.eng/*.wag - file(s) and their carrying folder's name in brackets, Plus Consist definition (parameter), which should match *.con-file's name.

Having MSTS is not mandatory, but it will give You ready content and many sample-files to use.

Sorry, I didn't see good comprehensive manuals about manually preparing of rolling stock for using in game.
All this - is decades of trials end faults plus forums advices.
