The drawing shows clearly, how Author tried to find some compromise, making less distortion above more important areas, leaving greater distortion to oceans or less important (to his purposes) regions.

Only when you peel back the lid to see what is inside. Thousands of MSTS users enjoyed their routes w/o ever knowing the lay of the land was bent and so therefore was everything placed on it.

They had no access to satellite view when building route, and even terrain heightmaps were not that popular. So, lat/lon values were just almost useless gimmick.
Today, I see no point using MSTS map projection on new routes. In some cases maps are skewed so much, that you get 30% false distances + false angles.
Just use TSRE projection and learn to live with not accurate OR lat/lon values.
