Interesting... I would have thought making it a 2-8-0 would be more practical...

Yes, true, but this locomotive's history is that it originally (1856) was a 0-8-0, a Winans "Camel", which featured his own patented valve gear. When the Pennsy rebuilt the thing at Altoona in 1862, they converted the valve gear to the Stephenson Link gear, where the links took up the space where number two set of drivers used to be, hence the odd wheel arrangement. It's the only Camel on the PRR that remained a Camel throughout it's life (scrapped in 1870). The Civil War created a shortage of motive power on the Pennsylvania so the Altoona shops came up with many other odd-ball rebuilds during this period, which by themselves would make for an interesting series of projects.
