Just record keeping. Almost all of these 292 named buildings have been modeled. All are in the Loop plus a few blocks further south. A good number are still there. Not listed are named buildings on the near north side or west of the river.

Impressive body of work, my friend when the fact is remembered that each is different.

I don't know the numbers but I'm sure the above list is less than half of the buildings in the models, perhaps around 1/3 of the total. The vast majority are not finished, but they're there and they're all based on the dimensional data in the Sanborn maps.

Attached Image: Chicago aerial 1933.jpg
Blue lines bound the buildings in this list,
Green lines bound the probable scope in this area,
Red lines is the Elevated railway that forms the Loop.
Streetcar lines are on almost all streets within the blue boundary lines.
Yellow text spots the major passenger railroad terminals. The IC location is not known to me but the terminal yard is obvious.

Dave, it is impressive, what you are doing! I've never been in Chicago (or in the USA for that matter), but it would be definitely worth a visit.

Where is the Illinois Central? I'm afraid that is the only one I've heard of, I don't remeber when and how. (Probably it was the The Doobie Brothers - Long Train Runnin'.) And sorry for my lack of local knowledge, Chicago is really far from where I live. :)

Hi Peter,

I grew up outside of Chicago and saw quite a bit of interesting buildings as a kid. I suppose that's what has drawn me into this project.

Chicago is known as an important city of architecture; the first modern skyscraper was build in Chicago in the late 1800's and the architecture styles developed here over the following 30+ years were very influential in other cities. Many of the buildings built in the 1920's used the Art Deco style and a tour of them is amazing. For example, the Carbon and Carbide building:

Attached Image: Carbidecarbon entrance.jpg
Entrance

Attached Image: Carbidecarbon elevator.jpg
Elevators at lobby

That's gold leaf on everything and a lot of gold leaf adorns the exterior of the building as well. Looks like they had a lot of money on hand.

A whole lot of buildings were clad in terracotta stonework. A lot of that is remarkable art.

What makes my work possible is a set of old Fire Insurance maps; all large cities and most smaller ones in the US had such maps; They were drawn at a scale of 50 foot to the inch and printed on E sized paper (roughly 2ft by 3ft). The maps were sold to fire departments and they showed overall dimensions, heights, construction materials, type of roof, and where windows were to be found. What I do is measure things from downloaded maps and turn them into basic models. With photos on hand I can then add 3d detail to make the model resemble the actual building.

ALL of Chicago, ca. 1950, can be found in these maps, and I have a digital copy of all of the locations i need for this project. It is a lot of work but it is the kind of work I very much enjoy -- research and building architectural models. For the list in the basenote I have over 1500 .jpg images and 94 Sanborn maps.

Over the years lots of old buildings have been knocked down and very tall ones replaced them and a city that was once pretty rich is on hard times today. Some new things are good looking, others I have to say are butt ugly. But I suppose that's true of most cities -- you can't save everything.

Thanks for sharing.
Is that City from post#3 that you modeled already, or that is whole City from Google Earth?
Looks impressive.

The picture shows a small part of a large city... within the blue lines it is maybe 2km square. The entire city is ~600 square km.

Chicago is the largest railroad terminal in the United States and probably held that title from as far back as the 1870's or 80's. In the city center, which I am modeling, held the worlds largest street car network in the first half of the 20th century.

I'm not building a large route; It extends maybe 1/2 km off to the left in the picture and 5-6km in the direction of the upper left hand corner. The section in the city center, called The Loop, will only have streetcar and some commuter rail. The rest of the route is almost entirely industrial switching/shunting. I create a set of maps for industrial switching/shunting and it can be viewed here.

Very interesting note: I didn't know many of those facts.
But mentioning "whole" City, I have tried to ask, was that photo at 3-rd post the view of your route at current stage of construction (i.e. screenshot from train simulator or route editor), or it is some kind of complete model of the same landscape, seen at some other source (I know only google earth, with it's 3-d buildings, which looks like that photo) or maybe, that is some of flight simulators... Looks very detailed. The name of the file is Chicago aerial 1933, so, I guess, that is aero-photo, taken from aircraft. Amazing.

Oh, that... it is a real photograph of the city take in 1933.

Glad you got the Engineering Building named correctly. My dad worked there, and I worked across the street in the LaSalle-Wacker for a bunch of years looking at his old offices.
