A few notes on power in New York City's rail complex:

All third rail in Penn Station is over running at 750 Vdc for Amtrak, Jersey Central & Long Island Rail Road.
Grand Central Station third rail is under running at 750 Vdc.

Metro North and Amtrak overhead wire is 11,000 Vac in Amtrak electric territory; New York to Boston Washington and Harrisburg, Pa.

You see both catenary and third rail in New York Penn Station but only third rail in New York Grand Central Station.
Note that the ongoing LIRR East Side Project brings the LIRR over running 750 vdc third rail into Grand Central Station but are separated from the Metro North (ex New Haven & Hartford RR) tracks.
The new LIRR tunnels and station are below the present tracks & station at Grand Central.
A forum discussing the project is here:

vince

edit:add info only
A Metro North out of Grand Central. Begins on third rail and changes on-the-fly to overhead wire.

Some more progress on the texturing, something I'm learning as I go. The phase V unit is better to show this sort of thing, since the black on the Empire Service scheme hides a lot of detail.

The thread on trainsim.com has more frequent updates and more discussion, but I thought I'd drop in here and give an update since I haven't in a while. The pace has slowed, as I just got off of finals week at university and traveled back home for the summer. I released a beta to test and find issues with the locomotive - so far, just a few small geometry things, and then some issues with texture mapping have been found. I've also made significant progress in the 3D cab area, which has been the cause of some massive frustration. It's finally chugging along. Once the cab is done it's just tweaking and fixing the models, painting up about a half dozen units and then releasing to the public. The P40/42 model is under way right now and should only be a couple weeks behind the dual modes.

Textures in the cab are placeholders for now - I'm focusing on getting the displays and all the parts working before I spend time beautifying it. As of now, all of the driving controls (horn, bell, reverser, combined power handle, train/locomotive brake) are all animated and working nicely. The display has brake pressures and speedometer added, although I need to find some references on what information is display on the left screen.

Thought I'd update over here since I haven't in a while. Decided if I'm going to model the Genesis engines I might as well do Viewliner IIs and Amfleet IIs. So here we are.

Lots of behind the scenes work going on. Genesis engines just need the cab completed (cab signals, some textures), and Amfleets and Viewliners are modeled and need UV mapping and textures.

Here's the Viewliners, ordered Bag/Dorm, Baggage, Diner, sleeper, Amfleet II coach. Not much of a point to do passenger cars unless you can ride in em, so interiors will be done for all car types. I've already modeled the interior of the Amfleet II coach (planned cafe varient as well.) Lots on the plate at the moment, appreciate everyone's patience.

Not to drag up an old post, but as I'm only learning about this project today, I'm curious.. Is there any newer update to this than mid July?

Hi -

I'm a full time college student, so unfortunately the project's updates slowed to a halt during the summer. I've also learned a lot in the modeling and texturing department, so while these models look nice on the outside, they're kind of a disaster to make templates for. It's not "dead forever", but if and when it restarts, it'll be with new (and hopefully better, more optimized) models.

I was considering releasing everything I had, the mod in its current form, and all of its source files, models, and textures, if anyone wanted to work on them in the mean time. I'll see if I can get those up this weekend.
