I looked up this thread because I was concerned that I had "lost" shadows in my Open rails installation.
I have just bought a new PC to replace my aging laptop, and was experimenting with turning all the graphic settings to max. (new and better graphics card).
Imagine my disappointment when the shadow quality was much worse than my laptop! Having read this thread, I decided to try some of the suggestions. The thing that makes the difference is the Viewing distance setting in the Options - Video tab. I had set this to 10 km (10000m) to see distant objects. This has an adverse effect on shadows. If I set the viewing distance to 1000m, shadows are dark and detailed. This must be a bug, as I cannot imagine why one would want the distance setting to control the shadow quality. Here are two screenshots to illustrate. One is at 1000m, the other at 10km.
