Glb support added, will commit shortly.

Don't we need support in TSRE5 also, so we can add the glTF content to our routes and activities?

I noticed that the screenshot makes the textures look rather darker than what you see inside Blender or in the texture itself.

Yeah, I forgot to mention, by the gltf specification the base color texture and the emissive texture must be in the sRGB color space!

Hmmm.....have you recomputed the "normals" and culled the "back faces"?
I would save this as a .blend file first, and then reload it as such. For me my savior has always been .obj, when things are suspect.YMMV.

Does this model appear as one big "blob" in the hierarchy in Blender?

As Wayne can attest, I am a "holdout" to upgrades with Blender as it took me some time to get the .3ds and .obj importers/exporters to my liking, by hacking the python code.

Oh how I regret having posted this model! http://www.elvastower.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/goodnight.gif

But I guess, I did the right thing for a change, lots of progress in one day, super!!!

I would be wary of running anything unofficial like that on a Windows machine. Apparently all the source code for the "fixed" binary is there, but I would have to look at the code to see if there is anything "suspect". Any takers out there?

Steve

Yes not good, but lets not mix our windows 7 issue with the format being introduced, the glTF seams to me like an expansion and not a replacement, I imagine that MSTS compatibility is the foundation of Open Rail.

This is more about how we expand our capabilities for model making. Blender is free, supported, and available but people will still be able to use GMAX (abandoned by its creator in 2005), TrainSim Modeler (abandoned at some point in the 2000's), 3D Canvas/Crafter ( abandoned multiple times but pretty much dead by 2014). But none of these abandoned products will ever give us the ability to have improved textures added into ORTS. And obviously... this discussion is about "what if"? This "what if" also has a reasonably big impact on what happens next (if anything).

It could also free up Wayne from having to maintain an exporter.

Trainz adopted FBX format and PBR textures in their 2019 release but didn't kill off the old formats (not totally). They work side by side.

I'm not sure that is the case. The .s file is well understood (today by only a small number of people, Wayne Campbell being one). AFAIK the only reasons other visual effects are not present is the lack of a corresponding shader (or is it more vtx_Staes(), I dunno) and hand editing of the .s file to add the relevant codes. Yeah, it is not as slick as having the tools do that for you (especially showing you what it will look like) but as you note the most common tools are the walking dead and other than acquiring the source code there is no hope of changing that.

WRT new visual effects, I'd like to see a LightAmbient effect as I think the existing ambient effect is far too dark. I'm ever hopeful a bumpmap feature can be provided and something that is a more subtle reflective feature than the gloss, something that can pick the the color of the sky. Actually I really want ray tracing but I'm not holding my breath for that.
BTW, your list of dead tools omitted Shetchup Make (i.e., the free version) in 2018.

Just some 'quick and dirty' testing, exporting a loco from Blender to glb and viewing with Win10 3D viewer and 'painting' and applying stickers to the model in Windows 10 3D paint.

How will an open glTF 3D format impact on the future of payware?
