Working with Allen Norton on some logging engines we discovered that there is a problem with the rotation of trucks into and out of curves on geared engines. In MSTS they do. In ORTS’s early versions they do. In current ORTS they don’t. The trucks stay rigidly centered regardless of the hideous logging road curves we throw at them.

Allen has a very old ORTS installation (v.1880) and in that version the trucks turn into the curves.

I am currently running a pretty up-to-date installation (v.2955) and they do not.

Thinking this might be a problem with his locomotives I steamed up Kelsey Lumber Co. No. 16, a two-truck Shay by Reg Furniss* – shamelessly relettered for my logging interests – that works in both MSTS and ORTS (Allen’s new engines won’t load in MSTS) and tested it running around the same sharp curve on the Sumpter Valley route in both MSTS and ORTS. The results:

ORTS

I wondered if this was unique to geared steamers and so tested a diesel – GP38 on narrow gauge track!

It is unique to geared steamers.

Just to make sure it isn’t just Allen’s engines or Reg Furniss’ little Shays I tested Kelsey Lumber Co. No. 3, 3-truck Shay (nee Ozark Northern #100) by Jon Davis and achieved the same results.

The earliest ORTS version I could pull from my archives was v.2591 and the no-swivel issue was present then. So somewhere between v.1880 and v.2591 something changed. :pleasantry:

*What ever happened to Reg anyway? He made neat engines. 

Great detail on the Shay, the angle POV shows off the intricate work. Kudos to the modellers involved in all the models, too.

Cheers Bazza.

Hi Herb,

It's not unique to geared steam locomotives or narrow gauge - it's also prevalent in many conventional steam locomotives as well - it's just not as obvious due to larger radius curves... I've found many steam locomotives where the pilot and/or trailing truck/bogie does not track the rails in ORTS - while they work fine in MSTS... Yet - strangely - other steam locomotives work fine in both MSTS and ORTS... Derek seemed to think that he first noticed this problem back when ORTS was making changes to accommodate specialty cars like articulated freight/passenger cars... "Edward K" and I spent a bunch of time trying to find the smoking gun that causes some to work and others to not... No joy - that was months ago and it's just something I've learned to live with - with hopes - that someone will be able to figure this out...

Going to read Eugen's suggestion now...

Scott

I hope you guys resolve this issue, as I have a couple of geared Locos I would like to release for OR.

Bill

Was it for this reason that you didn't release your Heisler?

The good news is that I did manage to find the bug that prevented the LMS Garratt 4896 from working. Its possible this bug was the cause of other issues. Is the above Shay #5 the only locomotive that does not work? Would it be possible to test it?

In short, will the owner of the LMS Garratt 4896 please step forward. Your locomotive now works. Fix is not submitted yet, but will be after I run some more tests.

Edward

I'll send the Shay to you post haste. I think this is fantastic news and I'm sure Bill Pratt will be pleased too.

Edward. You'll have my PM.

Actually, Bill's Heisler and his Climax work just fine and we have no idea why. I think it hasn't been released yet 'cuz he's working on a backlog of updates.

It has been so long that I don't remember all the details, but basically Herb and I just never got it packaged for uploading. Afraid I just had too many projects going at one time. Now that we are re-exporting my models for OR, we will likely get he uploaded before too much longer.
