Heh, the Penn Central and some other 70's railroads lost more than a few cars. In the 1970's, the Penn Central even managed to have 277 cars stolen from them and impressed into the fleet of a small Illinois railroad, who then proceeded to charge other railroads fees for using the stolen cars!
As for cars sitting abandoned, sometimes it seems that properties come under the ownership of banks/holding companies/etc. that don't really care much about the actual land use, and so it sits "empty" on the books for many years until someone looks into it.
