Heh, the Penn Central and some other 70's railroads lost more than a few cars. In the 1970's, the Penn Central even managed to have 277 cars stolen from them and impressed into the fleet of a small Illinois railroad, who then proceeded to charge other railroads fees for using the stolen cars!

As for cars sitting abandoned, sometimes it seems that properties come under the ownership of banks/holding companies/etc. that don't really care much about the actual land use, and so it sits "empty" on the books for many years until someone looks into it.

That would have been unbelievable, if only it wasn't Penn Central - they sometimes lost track of trains running on their system, and managed to let rot most of Maine's potato crop at Selkirk yard in '68...their internal organization must have been abysmal indeed.

I think they'd have less problems in finding new users if they clean up the land first...but that would be expensive, and wouldn't allow for photos like these to be taken :).
