I have been considering getting Open Rails, but the one thing that i would like to know is this; will i still be able to use MSTS as a completely separate program, or will they be mixed together?

OR is a separate "stand alone" program that can access/run MSTS content. There will be no need to alter your basic MSTS installation in anyway.

ORTS can be like a MSTS replacement or just a side program following MSTS installations or other multiple folders you set ORTS to seek. Only thing that may be mixed is there will be stock an content made in future that may not work in MSTS but are built for ORTS. Once you try ORTS it will be hard going backs to MSTS unless you want to crash, make new activities or route edit till ORTS has its own editors.

Minor comment in reply to Andre: There are some changes that could be made to MSTS .eng and .wag files for use in OR that might cause MSTS a problem but AFAIK they are all optional.

That said, once you start making such changes (IMO) you'd be wise to keep your used-in-OR roster apart from your used-in-msts roster. You might not be running MSTS anymore after you adjust to OR but there is still a need to run AE and RE and both of those do look at what's going on in the \trains folders.

Thanks for all the input, with that said I'll try running open rails and see what routes and stock work in ORTS.

WARNING - once you familiarize yourself with ORTS - there is no going back to MSTS...
:D

Scott

I agree with you.The only thing keeping me for dumping MSTS entirely is the Activity Editor which I still need in order to make new activites on existing routes.I wish the developers would make this a priority for 1.0 release.
