IDK to which extent these are in use in Europe, though, but in the US, they´re quite common, AFAICT.

This hotbox means overheating axle bearing? Then i still don't get the point of these in game, as this is not simulated.

Hotbox = hot bearing, exactly.

The point of them in-game is, that even if everything is OK, you will get a confirmation message, á la: "BNSF detector, Milepost 53.0, no defects, repeat, no defects. Total axles 345. Temperature 86 degrees. Detector out."
