Is there a character limit to .wag or .inc file names? I've got a handfull of .wags that won't load -- 42 characters in the names -- and I'm wondering if that is the problem or I need to look over them again for something else....

TIA.

Yes, I believe so, Dave. The number of legal alphanumerics in MSTS reflects the software limitation of the time. Try less than 24 characters.

As I recollect, there is a part name character limitation, too, when using the msts default conversion tool, conv3ds.exe. This is ten characters, otherwise the tool deletes all characters after the tenth, which is why the pantograph longer parts names prevented the animation working. The fix is to manually edit the relevant part name in the shape file.

Cheers Bazza.

Open Rails Question.

Turns out my immediate error was my own... but I am curious now to learn if indeed OR uses the same 24 character limit that MSTS did... or something more useful.

That might depend on your activity editor, Dave. If you use the MSTS default editor then you will [probably] come up with the same limitation. The only 'solution' might be to hand edit the relevant consist files. You might want to add OR_ to the name so you know it's an OR only vehicle.

The BIG proviso - DON'T do anything to cause MSTS to throw a hissy fit, it could/might/perhaps/possibly cause a fatal error and major crash.

Cheers Bazza.

There should be no limitations on file name lengths, directory name lengths or total path lengths in Open Rails itself. The Windows file systems and normal APIs do have limits for these, though: 255 characters for file/directory names in the file system and 260 characters for the whole path in normal APIs - the latter is something you might hit (and which we might be able to work around with a bit of effort).

Yes there is. But I cannot remember the exact number. However, ConBuilder's error detection knows the exact number and will report an error when the number is exceeded. I could quickly run a test and determine what it is, however, I am in Istanbul, Turkey, with just my iPad.

So try this: find a WAG that errors, remove one character till no error.

===========
Using Carbonite mobile app I was able to access my backup at Carbonite on the Cloud. The WAG file in my "ConBuilder test Trainset" longWAGfilename folder has 36 characters. So 35 must be the MSTS limit.

Also be aware that MSTS has a limit of 33 characters for folder names.
