I am making models that will be used on a route that will be largely OR and wanted to know the max viewing distance for OR for objects? it is 2000 in MSTS> thanks.

Hi Chris,
I believe the maximum in MSTS is 3000, but in OR you can set the distance yourself up to 10,000 feet.... nice!

Its more complex than that, depending on the object density one can get a detailed viewing distance of up to 10 kilometres and one can configure OR to set object LOD distances to viewing distance. In this case all objects are drawn when the terrain tiles are drawn.
Note: One does need a fairly low object count per tile for this. I found most Australian country routes will tolerate long viewing distances and OR is a massive improvement for such routes.

ok, in this case i am most concerned about a backdrop that will display at the edge of the scenery but it may actually be 3d buildings as well, still doing development. i was not sure how distant mountains worked and if that would do this, so i expected to make either a 3d range of structures scaled to look like they are at a distance or a long interlocking set of laticed backdrops to give a 3d effect...but the distance ablity of OR is great to know about so much better than MSTS..

Hi Chris,
When I was drawing CFB Greenwood I could look from one side of the base and only see the hanger with the tower on it, about a mile and a half. I went to the same spot in OR and could see all the buildings behind the tower, and the tress that surround the base... the complete scene like you would see if you were there... easily two and a half miles away.

great to hear Paul, that gives me hope. I can scale down the backdrop elements if needed, it is the illusion of reality that is sought. thanks again.

thanks Barry a work in progress...Steve had the idea of a lattice of interlocking parts that give an extra dimesnionality to it. a great thought...will keep going. and thanks for the very helpful input here
