Thanks Marhus for the help, wasn't sure what to tinker with without it.

Still gets that nice little "burst" when throttling up.

Paul,

Have you tried the diesel smoke replacement over at 3dtrains?
The smoke texture is a little finer and the throttle down affect ads a bit of realism.
The diesel smoke in ORTS has been an ongoing issue with lots of separate threads. Maybe we need a sticky.

Hi Steve,

No, hadn't thought of that. If I'm not mistaken the smoke in both OR and MSTS is just a file in the Train Simulator folder somewhere that I was going to tinker with to see if I could bass a little grey to... I found it a few years ago, just have to remember where!

OK, this turned out to be easy enough. Found the dieselsmoke ace in the global textures folder in the sim, used it to get the alpha, but changed the place texture to my "bridge dark grey" texture and that was all. Saved it, then converted it back to an 8-bit texture.

Here's how it turned out:

Idling at 0 throttle:

Thrust of exhaust when throttle opened to 23%:

Exhaust settles down at 23% seconds later:

Throttle closed:

Throttle at 35% and running at 30 mph:

No problem, you´re welcome Paul :)

Actually, I thought I had everything figured out about smoke, but you showed me, that I was wrong :p

Cheers, Markus

I was a firefighter, eat enough smoke I know what it should look like when it's coughed up!

Here's the smoke file if anyone wants it, had to zip it as the forum wont take ace files. Just need to unzip it, take the ace file within, and put it in TrainSimulator>Global>Textures Might want to rename the dieselsmoke file that is already there first.

Attached File  dieselsmoke.zip (522.22K)
Number of downloads: 198

Paul, there might be a small problem with the new smoke file, I love the color texture but the outlines of the squares are noticeable. (these images are enlarged and cropped for easy viewing, but the squares are apparent at screen size when running OR). I don't know enough about ace files, but "putting foot in mouth" I would suspect that the problem lies in the contrast boundary between the background and smoke, plus the 512x512 vs 1024x1024 size difference, 32 bit being identical.

[1st screenshot and ace below are my current defaults - no squares but lacking nice color difference ]

[2nd screenshot and ace below are from new dieselsmoke.zip download - fine color effects, squares appear]
