Pennsylvania RR Tug Boat "Elmira"

STeam Tug 1940 era

This tugboat displays the livery of the PRR Railroad and was typical of the tugs used by the EL RR moving car floats and other shipping in the New York Harbour for the RR.

Such tugs were steam powered and used commonly throughout maritime commerce in the US between 1890 and 1960 when Diesel powered tugs took over. MOst of the old steam tugs ended up in the boneyards off of Staten island, and a few remain as museum ships today.
