Hello again,

There is a second problem I would like to share with you on Full Bucket Line 3 when running the FBL Turbine (http://dts2.trainsim...p?fn=fblmbb.zip). The unit runs ok to begin with, but I noticed what looked like dark exhaust smoke behind it.

Attached Image: BBL-smoke.jpg

As I drive off it follows and in fact I think this is the smoke, but it doesn't exit the exhaust.

Attached Image: BBL-void.jpg

When I stop it spreads out behind the loco, filling all FoV. At the same time the frame rate drops dramatically and like with a "real" black hole time seems to slow down until it stops. Even the mouse pointer becomes almost dead. CPU usage is still not that high.

Attached Image: BBL-void1.jpg

If I wait too long no keystrokes are acted on any more, but if I manage to switch to another view (forward), then everything seems back to normal.

In MSTS it runs normal. Light smoke exits both exhausts.

I have installed MSTS and OR by the book, incl. recommended updates.
System is an AMD laptop A6 with Radeon graphics, 4 core, Win7 64. I have installed a couple of routes and some stock and mostly it is going well, apart from some random OR crashes when pressing a key.

Regards,
Peter.

Looks like you have a bad model. Smoke has been positioned in wrong place (relative to loco) and it needs to be decreased. Open Rails or your laptop are not to fault. (Caution: I may be wrong, best to get 2nd opinion.) Anyway attached is some information that may help and also type in "diesel smoke" in the Elvas search box and you'll find quite a lot of information about this same issue. One last thing take a look at these links in the download section/computer utilities - two great programs for adjusting diesel smoke and power. Excellent, use them all the time. http://www.elvastowe...1955-and-later/
The two programs are the diesel power updater and the diesel smoke updater. So I think you have to adjust the numbers in your engine file and all should look correct.
Here are the lines you are looking for in the .eng file (depending on the engine you may have only one exhaust entry or two - make a copy of the engine file before changing anything)

Exhaust1
(
0.1 4.706 -3.797 >>>>>>the location on the model of the exhaust stack defined from the main shape's pivot point. If I remember it's the last number you have to change until the smoke is over the exhaust vent
0 1 0
0.3 >>>>>>width of exhaust vent

DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude( 0.5 )
DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude( 10.5 )
DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate( 1.2 )
DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate( 14.0 )

I saw you just joined Elvas, welcome. Many good people here. As a welcome, one time offer -a free diesel exhaust adjustment. I loaded it in a temp route and it does smoke, very scary, looks like some nightmare critter is behind it.
The turbine wagon behind has two side-by-side exhaust vents near the rear (see pics) and the engine has one exhaust vent. Since the turbine wagon does not have any exhaust entries I positioned the exhaust over the engine vent, If you want them back over the turbine just keep lowering the numbers (put a minus in front of the numbers if you hit zero and keep moving them back) until they are were you want them. I used Marcus's fine diesel smoke program to lessen the smoke output and lowered it a bit more, looks better. Shots taken at a little above idle. If not to your taste, just increase the numbers and you'll get more exhaust. Compare the original engine file with the modification and you will see the differences.

The attached zip file contains a BigBlow Engine folder - inside are two other folders, self explanatory.

Thank you very much, Gerry. That's very nice of you.

The B unit now doesn't smoke any more at all, which I believe is correct for a turbine, even if it does burn heavy fuel oil. I don't know why it has two exhausts in the centre, as the very large hole at the back is the jet exhaust. AFAIK the A unit has a diesel motor. I think I'll turn that smoke down a little, too.

It looks and works just great now.

Kind regards,
Peter.

The diesel engine in the A unit only works in the yards.
Then, there are no smoke.

If the turbine engine is in good shape, the exhaust is only hot air, and almost no smoke.

The holes in the center of de B unit are air intakes for auxiliary devices.

Cheers.

Exactly the smoke issue one tends to have with all turbine engines in ORTS. Best to edit them manually as DPU (the program linked by Gerry) does not yet provide a suitable configuration for gas turbine locos.

Also, mind you that there is a newer version of DPU available, DPU VX3.0. It incorporates a number of improvements over the one Gerry linked to, including but not limited to being able to alter the values the program uses to replace old ones in the .ENG file with.

Cheers, Markus

Thank you all.

Actually, Markus, I tried DPU X3 yesterday on the UP turbine. As you said, it's not enough for this one, but at least it doesn't look like a cheap horror movie any more.

However, contrary to the docs, no files are backed up in the backup folder, which it has created.

Cheers,
Peter.

Yep, the backup problem is a known bug, which will be fixed (hopefully and finally) in the next version. It´s about one step of finding out the name of the folder of the ENG file not executing properly somehow, so I guess this info just ends up in some wrong variable (IE, data storage space) that is not linked to the actual backup creation process.

Best to manually backup your files or write a simple batch file to do the backup.

For more known bugs or reporting new ones, please see here (on ET) or here (on TS).

Cheers, Markus
