Hello there.

I am new to Open Rails and I've decided to model my first vehicle for the sim.

As most of the German Dosto vehicles are inter-compatible with other Dosto cab cars, it stands to reason that I'd like to make this new cab car visually similar to ProTrain RE160 vehicles so I wouldn't have to create another incompatible dosto vehicle series.

So, I was wondering if anyone would give me tips on how to model effectively in blender for Open Rails.

Attached are the images of the DBbzf 761 that I am creating for open rails, the 1118 normal faces (3 and 4 sided faces) can be optimised to 290 using ngon faces, but I'm not sure if Open Rails can support those types of faces though due to MSTS's age.

Please read the thread about high poly models.

Cheers.

Hi!

Many teachers in their 3D tutorials will say to you:
"Avoid ngon faces for polygons and as much as possible keep 4 points polygon".

When your project will be finish, you will must to convert your project for OR. The converter will convert all your polygons in triangular face in 3 points polygon. It's same thing for MSTS and also Flight Simulator. I don't know why all projects must be converted in triangular polygons but it seems to work like this.

Thank you for your replies, I'll keep on working on the model and come back here if I find any problems.

Well done BenDragon, but, a curiosity: how are you going to export to ORTS from Blender? Gmax (Trainsimgamepack) or conv3ds?

Regards, Alex. :oldstry:

Hello,

There exists on these boards a partially developed exporter for Blender, I don't know if any further development is under way, there has been no news for a while.

Good luck with the project, will follow with interest how you progress as I am experimenting with and learning Blender.

Cheers,
John.

Now that's an interesting project. The German community has been missing this particular car for quite a while :oldstry:
Good luck!

Can you show a broadside shot?

With the exporting test complete, I move forward to making interior details.

While I could find references of the top deck, I had problem with conflicting information with the lower deck.

The references I used are:

Upper Deck:

Middle Deck:

Lower Deck:

Models:

Misc:

Thing is, there's a lot of conflicting information here with the lower deck, and since I don't really know the layout of the 761, I can't really tell which pictures are facing which direction, I'm not really convinced that the entire interior is covered with pictures we've been able to find.

During our search, we've discovered there's 2 different versions of the vehicle too with differences with the windows above the door, so it would be nice to clarify which vehicle is which.

It's also difficult to know how the seats are laid out in each vehicle, some have 2+2 all the way, others have partial 2+2, followed by a toilet, followed by seats along the wall.

Also note that I think it's only one end that's covered.

If you've got some more detail to add to our collection, such as plans or drawings you've made yourself of the deck and the vehicle, that would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.
