I bought a new laptop since my old one is falling apart, What would I need to run Open Rails on it? I have heard video cards can be a problem, Any info would be helpful.

It's very unlikely that you'll pick up anything that can't run Open Rails, but the graphical requirements are:

  • DirectX 9.0c
  • Shader Model 2 (Shader Model 3 recommended)

There's certainly no compatibility problems with OR and Windows 8.1. :oldstry:

Can DOS based MSTS tools run in W8.1? Also, older 16 bit utils?

Thanks.

Cheers Bazza

In the 32bit version, all of these have a reasonable chance of working. In the 64bit version, any 32bit tools have a reasonable chance of working but genuinely 16bit programs will not run.

Since I have 64bit Windows 8.1, if there are any freeware tools you'd like me to try out and identify issues with, just drop me the links.

On the OR Website, you need these installed for OpenRails to work
MSTS
XNA Framework 3.1 Redistributable
NET Framework 3.5 SP 1 Redistributable

MSTS? FOr what, other than the add-ons? I seem to recall a thread where it has been discussed that no MSTS stuff is needed any longer...

MSTS is needed for some of the files. It will be a long time before a reasonable number of routes and stock are available that do not use some MSTS content.

The GLOBAL files you mean? Renamed that folder temporarily and fired up ORTS, which spit errors en masse. ;)

:) for the info :)

OR works correctly on its own if one has the "GLOBAL" "SOUND" "ROUTES" and "TRAIN" folders, no other MSTS files are required unless wishes to edit routes or create activities.
