Here's the start of the first DMMC unit, C44-9W 3000, one of the two Dash 9s the railroad bought new, and their only first hand units, bought when the road was first founded. (Subject to change. May throw in a GP70 or two because why not? No, GP70 is not a typo, it's a fictional EMD model that doesn't stretch reality all that much.)
It will be much more colorful, with a CNW inspired paint job. Haven't made up my mind 100% on the details yet, however the trucks will be aluminum colored as shown here, with a black underframe.
How off-kilter would it be if Dash 9s were equipped with M5s?

On the basis of "it's your party..." why not.
Production of C44-9W's was 1993-2004 according to wikipedia.
You could still buy a new M5 from Nathan in 1999.
So, depending when your railroad bought their C44's it could have an M5 from the factory or it could have one after delivery.

Depending on how well your railroad maintains the horns, you may not want M-series horns on your stuff. They had to be retuned and voiced every three to six months, or they would produce some very off-kilter sounds. They had a massive catalog of replacement parts (five sizes of most parts - one for each bell). There's also the security concern. Some old-school stuff like that is liable to walk away some night.
On the bright side, someone might still be making M-series horns, just not Nathan. It would be possible that they could have gotten an M5 from the start, but it's equally possible it was placed after delivery. I've seen plenty of gevos with horns that aren't K5HLs, and I know of someone who's seen a P5 on an SD70M-2, so the possibilities are endless

Thanks for reminding me that M-series are a bit touchy... I'm going to say that these were delivered with M5s, for now. (The Dash 9s were built in 1993.)
DMMC is somewhat on the small side of things, so the motive power, despite looking and being somewhat hodgepodge, is in good shape. The railroad just hasn't had time to paint locomotives.
I wanted to get the cab painted to give a good idea of what I'm planning to do overall. The paint job was inspired by CNWs EMD Cab units.
Is the paint job too complicated for a normal paint scheme? I've got 6 colors (Red, Green, Yellow, Sliver, Black, Aluminum), and I think I might be pushing it a bit.
Nearly the exact same color set was used on the CNWs E8s when first delivered.

Ugh, sorry about the quadruple post. I wish someone would notice...
Well, here's 3000 again, with a few fixes. (Reflective striping and "F" on the front.)
I've also given it a light weathering job to show 3000 as it is today. DMMCs locomotives are kept relatively clean, though they do build up grime, because DMMC tends to be a very busy road.
Honestly, I think that it looks a bit better with a light touch of grime.

I like your C&NW-inspired scheme, Parker. A very classy paint job!
Here's one of my fictional railroads, for the Willamette Lumber Co, a repaint of Paul Charland's wonderful Canadian National turret-cab diesel switcher. I love this unit, boxy, yet loaded with character. Spoke drivers and bar steel truck frames.
Thanks again, Paul!

Thanks for the nod Tim. If you even need to TSM files for the unit just rattle my cage!
Paul :-)
