I have just a basic computer that runs the MLT routes just fine. But I am wondering what kind if Computer is needed for open rails.

Am running ORTS on a SONY VAIO Laptop (i5 M430 @ 2.27GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeo HD 5650 @ 1GB VRAM; forget the cooling :sign_thanks:), settings of the grphics card, ORTS, and the OS tweaked @ about 45 FPS consistently on default routes. Won´t knock you off your seat, but it runs, and that twice as good as MSTS ;)

Cheers, Markus

Laptop default graphic cards appear to have the most problems. My system is about a year old and is not "top of the line" by any means and I have no difficulty running ORTS in XP.
Here are the specs on my system:
Intel Corporation DH77EB
Intel Core i7 3770 @ 3.40GHz
4.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 612MHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti 2048 MB
1T Hard Drive
Quantum QuadHyper Flux Energy Bus ( ;) :sign_thanks: not on the market yet - maybe never)

Here's some info from the Open Rails Download Page http://openrails.org/release.html, you also should read the Open Rails FAQ section: http://openrails.org/open.html

If you are going to get a new rig and you want to get the most Open Rails "punch" for your money, get the fastest multi-core CPU you can afford with an average free-standing graphics card.

Why wait? It's only a 5.51MB download, and it's free. All you need is MSTS installed (which you already seem to have) and the download. My experience is that OR gets about double the framerates than MSTS with any system. Intel i-series chips with onboard video seems to be the only difficult ones to use. These are in use on a lot of notebooks, however, the newer Ivy Bridge chips seem to have eliminated those problems.

There is no install, just download and click on Menu.exe and you're off and running. Worst case scenario: It doesn't work and you delete it.

A reasonable graphics card is required but a top of the line is not needed at this stage.

I have two almost identical systems the specs being..

MB ASUS P6X548 Pro
CPU i7 960 the other has an i7 940
Memory 3 channels 4 gig per channel
GPU one has an NVidia GTX 560Ti the second has a GTX 570 Superoverclocked

Now the second system with the slightly slower processor does a good deal better job of running ORthan the other.

I cannot at this stage give a frame rate comparison as th GTX 570 system will not boot with a failed SSD and I have not got around to fixing it yet.

A third faster system..

MB Gigabyte X79 ud5
CPU Intel i7 3830 6 core
Memory 4 channels 4 gig per channel
GPU NVidia GTX 680 with 4 gig of ram
This unit is (or should I say was, Note 1) driving Samsung 305T 2560x1600 monitor.

THis system is somewhat faster (on OR) than the GTX570 system, but OR on the faster systems suffers from OR at this stage having only a single render thread.
Now I will say this last system does an excellent job on OR getting a 4000 metre viewing distance (with distant mountains enabled also) with smooth animation rates on the freeware Berninan Bahn route.

To sum all this drivel up mid level GPU is required. Unfortunately I cannot give any recomendations at this stage as I am on my dail up line, having run out of hours on my broadband.

Note 1: I say was as it failed this morning display works but it has an intermitent blue cast, Damm and blast.
