Hi,

I need some advice on setting up OR on a Win 7 machine. FPS are lower than MSTS at same locations, same consists. In addition, OR is not showing all vegetation.

Here is a shot at St. Paul on the Ozark Northern in OR. Significant background vegetation is missing and fps at 28.

Same location in MSTS and fps around 36.

The OR setup instructions were followed with only one question. Microsoft NET Framework 3.5 SP 1 does not show on list of installed programs but was enabled under the Window enabling.
No success directly installing MS Framework 3.5 SP1 from the MS download site. Get Setup error about 3/4 into the installation ( several downloads and attempts ). Disabling the Win7 built-in Framework 3.5 had no effect on the setup failure.

Dramatic changes to the OR video or experimental options has little or no effect on the screen appearance. Auto tune setting enabled strips off vegetation as the consist moves along the route and generates a white void beyond. Structures are not affected. This occurs on all routes for all OR versions including 0.9.

I need some advice on what to do.

Mike

I see you have a lot of key modifications to settings... how do things work with all defaults? Specifically:

  • Set the world object density to 10. (This being set to 2 is probably why things are missing, no bug.)
  • Set the viewing distance to 2000m.
  • Turn distant mountains off.
  • Turn "Always use highest detail objects" off.
  • Turn "Extend object maximum viewing distance to horizon" off.

In Win7 you don't need to install Microsoft NET Framework 3.5 SP 1, it is part of Win7, only enable it.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the quick response. Here is a shot with your suggested settings. My bad on the WOD. I forgot I had set it at min.
The "bugs" are on my machine or setup. I have no doubts about OR.

It looks like Open Rails is going as fast as it can on your machine. Reducing the world object detail will trade off scenery details for some performance, and if you have any Catalyst Control Center settings cranked up (e.g. FSAA) turning them down may also help a bit.

What CPU does your machine have?

Jim,

Attached are the CPU specs and Catalyst settings. Lowering the Catalyst settings doubled the fps.

Getting small amount of detail flickering, so more tweaks needed but looks like it's in the ballpark.

Thanks,

Mike

That CPU seems very good, so the GPU settings would make sense as the limiting factor. If you want, you should be able to set up an application profile just for Open Rails (browse to the directory and select 'RunActivity.exe') so you can have high global settings but lower ones for just Open Rails.
