I can hardly wait until we can do detailed interiors with working cab controls!

There's a problem with the cab interior, neither Tim nor I have been able to find a photo of the engineer's or fireman's side of a Baldwin deckless cab from the circa 1888-1910 era.

You bet I got a kick out of seeing my suggestion come to fruition! I highly thank Tim for accepting my suggestion rather than just putting me off as some gimme pig, as well as outright nailing it. I heard Tim's even planning on slightly rotating the 5-chime to match photos of 53! Now that's attention to detail!

What does one look like? There are a lot of old Baldwin locomotives laying around stuffed and mounted - and running - here in Colorado...

The boiler comes all the way to the back of the engine, with narrow spaces for fireman and engineer. The fireman spends most his time on the tender tossing coal. Here's the only photo we have of an F-1 cab, just showing the backhead.

The D&RGW 315 2-8-0 has a nice deckless cab, but the only photos I've found on the web are taken during restoration while it was pretty well gutted, not much visual data there. Even though it's narrow gauge, I would think the arrangement of the basic parts would be laid out very similarly to it's bigger, older Baldwin sibling. Just "thinking out loud" here :lol2:. What a great little engine the 315 is; getting to be one of my favorite contemporaries.

Just got the pilot model of the 53 in. I'm using the 70's tender as a stand-in until I can build the 53's unique tank. The 70 is also a work in progress, since working on the 53 has urged me to improve parts on the 70 as the 53's get a make over, such as the feedwater pipes for instance. These are from the little L-9 switcher which were an almost perfect fit with just a little nudging here and there to meet up with the F-1's injectors and check valves. The latter were also rebuilt for the 53 and retrofitted to the 70.

An alternative source for a 2-8-0 backhead down here in Colorado is an adorable little Consolidation by the name of Great Western 51. She was a superstar up until the early 2000's, and I know Lindsay Birmingham, granddaughter (I think) of former owner John Birmingham, took a few photos in her cab. Sadly, the photos aren't on her website anymore, and even then I'm not sure if she got a good shot of the backhead.

I think the backhead is not the problem, it's the engineer's and fireman's side and placement of various controls in these areas.
