It generally seems like FPS are better with ACE textures instead of DDS, comparing the values shown in Carlo´s screens... For me, with generally low FPS due to my machine, this would be kill... any chance to sort the FPS problems out?

Cheers, Markus

Markus, what fps problem do you want to sort out?? Carlo wrote:

Also differences in frame rate are unnoticeable.

Compare the figures shown in Carlo´s screenshots, and you´ll see what I mean:

Ace: 63 and 72

DDS: 45 and 56

Unnoticeable difference? 18 in the first pair, 16 in the second one.

On my setup, this difference would get me into the higher teens. MSST does a better job, FPS wise, mostly. And my settings are just the standard settings for ORTS, only with extend highest LOD enabled (which doesn´t affect performance noticeably, maybe by 1 FPS +-).

Cheers, Markus

But how do you know what the pictures exactly show, when the creator of the pictures clearly says the difference is unnoticable? And what action do you expect based on these snapshot pictures? So answering the original question, the chance based only this info is 0%. (I am in bad mood today.)

But what the creator says and what the pictures show somehow doesn´t fit together. According to the popular saying, a picture says more than a thousand words, I´d say, Carlo should take a voice and explain a little, what´s up with the pics and what he said... to sort out this obvious conflict between the pics and words :(

You too are in bad mood, Peter? Well, at least I´m not alone then :clapping: (Never loose your humor, though!)

Cheers, Markus

Maybe the word "unnoticeable" was not exact, but what I wanted to say is

1) that at least in this case using dds textures did not improve frame rates
2) that the worse behaviour of dds textures could be caused also by a compression technique not optimized for all textures (as I explained in a post later, it was too long for me to select for every texture the best compression technique).

That explains a lot, Carlo! I first interpreted your post as saying, the improvements (which?) were only marginal, though there actual was the opposite happening.

:( for the clarification :clapping:

Cheers, Markus

Hi!

I finished to reskin a SLI/SD70Ace in Heritage Illinois Terminal and converted all TGA files in DDS format with the Photoshop's plug-ins. But when I tried it with the latest version of OR available X-2007, I obtain a grey locomotive. I tried it also with the X-2013 version from James Ross' site and obtain same result.

I had a first try. To test with a route with few .aces I used the legacy Northeastern Corridor. First I bulk converted all daylight .ace files to .tga files with Route Riter. Then I downloaded the freeware Paint.net and a related bulk converter plugin and performed a bulk conversion from .tga to .dds format (that goes quite fast), and had a couple of very short runs, one loading the .dds textures and one loading the .ace textures.

So all in all maybe I won't start a bulk conversion for existing routes (or maybe I will have a test with a more complex case) but... it works at the first trial, and this is remarkable, and of course it can surely be used for routes starting from scratch, thanks Peter !

To Carlos Santucci:
Where did you get your version of OR who use and can read DDS files?

Cheers!

Nicober

Hi Nicober,
I use a standard ORTS version. In the case of the test I did you can see the version on my screenshots. I also checked the dds checkbox in the Options-Experimental window.

Carlo, could you please attach your tree texture, that looks so weird on your pictures? I'm just curious what's going on. :)
