It seems that if you go off the path OR sets the emergency brake. If you switch to manual mode while off path it will not let you change the signals and so you get a SPAD every time you pass a shunting disc. I just worked through the SVR1 activity 'Diesel Shunting at Bewdley' where you go off path to shunt some wagons and then return to the path to take your rake to its final destination.

Is it wise for OR to be so restrictive off-path when 'Shunting as a Puzzle' is a common Activity type and by definition there is no single path.

In Manual mode, you need to use TAB to clear the signals. Repeating TAB will clear signals further ahead.
Another option is to clear signals and set the route using the Dispatcher Viewer (CTRL-9, but you must enable the option in Options > General).
Note that reversal of the train will not reverse the train's path - so after reversal you are moving 'backward' on the path (see location of 'eye' and direction of arrow in F4). In that situation you need SHIFT-TAB to clear the signal (which to the control logic is to the rear of the train).

The decision to split control in AUTO mode - without options to set switches and signals - and MANUAL mode - with restrictive signal working - was based on the necessities of the extensive and complex DEADLOCK processing, and of the logic of the signal control. It has been discussed many times before, but it is now so engrained in the whole signal and train control logic that it can no longer be removed.

In this Activity, you reverse past the end of the path and into a siding to some trucks. Once you leave the path you have to enter Manual Mode but you are now off-route. When you try to emerge past the sidings shunting disc, Tab doesn't work (a message comes up (something like 'Information - no signal on route')) and you get a SPAD when you pass the shunting disc. Are we saying that in OR it will not be possible to have Activities of the form 'go along route to sidings, make up consist without shunting being explicitly defined by reversing points. return along route'?

I haven't tried the Despatcher Viewer because I couldn't get anything despite enabling it in Options.

Anyhow, if you load the SVR route give the Activity a go, it doesn't take long to get to the sidings.
