Does OR support non-square textures? If so, then I would opt for 128 x 2048, 256 x 4096, or similar and horizontally tiled as necessary, as 4096 x 4096 is woefully inefficient.

Yes, non-square textures should work fine in OR and all graphics cards. However, I believe there's a limitation in makeace that, when generating mipmaps, it must be square and a power-of-2 width/height, so you might have to use other tools.

As i remember OR supports dds as textures, so why are you still using ace?

The older Rail Simulator ToAce.exe appears to work, which includes parameters for MSTS files (tested on a 128 x 2048 TGA file converted to MSTS *.ace format):

I've used quite a few 4096 textures on terrtex tiles. Too many and they overload the VRAM and I end up with white instead of the texture.

Ah, harrrr! Thanks Steve, you may have given me a clue to a problem I encounted some time ago with a loco texture. I eventually fixed it, but to this day have no idea how! :wallbash:

Cheers Bazza

Oh, thanks for the link Marc. I went looking for that some months ago and couldn't seem to get the RSC site to cooperate.

Huh? I must have been napping when this was done. I know we talked about its merits at length but I don't recall now that it was actually implemented. Are you sure?

Not sure, but few months ago someone from developers talked about dds textures.

Right now, Open Rails only supports ACE files. DDS is top of the list of "better" formats to add, IIRC.
