"Using Train Store has no benefit with Open Rails as OR only reads the necessary files for an activity".
Is this an assumption or a fact?

In my opinion, ORTS is even faster than Train Store as it doesn't have to put files anywhere like Train Store does in order for MSTS only to load one activity and the chosen rolling stock.

I haven't used Train Store personally, so I can only infer exactly what jobs it performs from others. From my understanding, the purpose of Train Store is to "hide" lots of unnecessary/not-currently-needed content to make MSTS load faster (or perhaps even crash less).
The OR menu will also have less to load when you use Train Store but, because of the way things are loaded in the menu, the effect will be much less noticeable than with MSTS. (Basically, OR loads the absolute minimum necessary to display the drop-downs in the menu and nothing more.)
It is my opinion that Train Store has no purpose with Open Rails.

James,
Train Store also has another very useful purpose. Using "Simple Train Store" it allows you to use the loose consists from a given route while running that route in explore mode. In essence it allows for sidings to be populated in explore mode as well as allowing you to run free form activities without using the Activity Editor to populate sidings.

Ah, interesting. Presumably it generates an activity with all these consists and the chosen player path, or something similar? This should of course work fine with OR.

As Train Store was written before Open Rails was released by Wayne, I suggest it is not needed.

Please let me re-phrase my question:
"Does the fact the Train Store moves all activity, .eng and .wag files from the MSTS directory, other than those needed to run a particular activity, have any beneficial effect on the running of OR?"

Not that I can see unless you have huge trains and routes folders . OpenRails.exe provides the menu for you to pick from, and only loads the bare minimum of files to let you do that. RunActivity is a separate process that does the donkey work of getting the files needed to set up the route and activity and will run within its own memory allocation.
I gave up using Train Store long ago and went down the mini install road and have continued that with OR so all of my MSTS/OR folders are themed and relatively small.
