Hi everyone. I am in the process of upgrading my computer. The motherboard went south so that has to be replaced. It's been ordered.

I plan on upgrading the power unit to 750 from the factory installed 300.

What would be a good graphics card to run OR? Before my computer died, I had just installed the latest version of OR. My computer just could not run it. Had poor FPS and the sim would eventually shutdown.

I determined that the factory installed graphics (integrated) was not good enough.

I want to spend no more than $200 for a better graphics card.

Thanks

Check TomsHardware.com for reviews -- look for the "Best Video Card for the Money" which they usually post monthly (they do the same for CPU's). They break down the whole list by how much you want to spend. I'm sure you'll get a couple of good recommendations there.

What Jack might be interested to know is whether his new card should be ATI or NVidia to get the best out of OR.

I've used ATI cards in all of my PCs before including my current one. And I can tell you I've had no problems running OR with it.

I have (and still have) both NVidia and AMD (ATI) and both do a decent job. I tend to think the NVidia's do a slightly better job but there is little in it. If one is tending towards high detail routes then something like an NVidia GTX 570 or a Radeon 7870 (not a 7970) will do a good job. I do have both of these cards, the performance on OR driving a 2560x1600 monitor on both cards is similiar. The performance on small monitors will be excellent.

So why would a 7870 do a good job but a much more powerful card like a 7970 would'nt?

Actually going from a GTX 580 to GTX 680 and now a Titan along with going from a AMD 5870 to a 7970 I've seen little to no effect on performance with OpenRails as far as resolution is concerned (1920x1080-2560x1440-2560x1600). Actually this is a great indicator of just how much OpenRails is CPU dependent right now.

An Asus GTX 660 DirectCU II Overclocked 2GB GDDR5 VGA Graphics Card is on the way.
