***NOTE WP2882CabviewFix.zip and WP2882CrewCarFix.zip DOWNLOAD LINKS***

The WP2882CabviewFix.zip link is for a file to correct a floating fireman seen outside of the left window of the cab when looking left in the "1" view. Unzip the file to a temporary location, and copy the wp2882rear.cvf file into the CABVIEW folder for these engines to correct this. You do not need to download this file and apply the fix if you are downloading the engines for the first time after 2/15/2013.

The WP2882CrewCarFix.zip link is for a file to correct fuel and water pickup and consumption problems when running the engines in an actual activity. Unzip the file to a temporary location and copy the contents into the "WP2882-CrewCar" TRAINSET folder to replace the original .wag files. You do not need to download this file and apply the fix if you are downloading the engines for the first time after 2/19/2013.

The following historical and technical information is derived from the books

"Steam Locomotives of the Western Pacific" by Stephen M. Hayes, 2010, and
"Western Pacific Steam Locomotives, Passenger Trains, and Cars"
by Guy L. Dunscomb and Fred A. Stindt, 1980:

The Western Pacific purchased two batches of 2-8-8-2 simple articulateds in 1931 and 1938.

#252 and #253 are from the first batch ordered (numbers 251-256, Class 251) from Baldwin in 1931. #257 and #260 are from the second batch ordered (Class 257, numbers 257-260) from Baldwin in 1938. The first batch were built with both Elesco (253 to 256) and Worthington (251 and 252) feedwater heaters, and the second batch were all supplied with Coffin feedwater heaters. All were oil burners. The first batch were built with riveted tenders of 22,000 gallon water capacity, and the second batch were built with welded tenders of 23,000 gallon water capacity. Both had 6,000 gallons of oil capacity. The 2-8-8-2's served in the Feather River Canyon between Oroville and Portola, CA from the time they arrived until they were retired. These engines were among the most powerful ever built, having greater tractive effort with their boosters than UP Big Boys and the DM&IR Yellowstones. All were retired by June 1951 and sadly all were scrapped in May, 1952.

Specifications:

Type: 2-8-8-2 Simple Articulated
Boiler: 250 psi, oil burning
Cylinder Bore and Stroke: 26" x 32"

MODELING INFORMATION:

Locomotive and Tender models created in 3DCrafter Professional Edition, Version 9.1.1 (Build 1256). Post Processing of shape file performed with Shapefixer File Version 0.1.0.39 by Paul Gausden. Textures created using MS Paint and Photoshop Elements 6.0, and converted to .ace format by TGATool2A by Scott Miller.

NOTE: With the exception of numbering, these models were not designed with re-texturing in mind so repaints will be difficult if not impossible to accomplish. Renumbering may be accomplished by editing the files WP252nums.ace, WP253nums.ace, WP257nums.ace, or WP260nums.ace .

INSTALLATION:

YOU MUST HAVE MSTS BIN INSTALLED FOR THE LIGHTS AND SOUNDS TO WORK CORRECTLY ON THESE MODELS. BIN IS ALSO REQUIRED FOR CAB SWITCHING BETWEEN PLAYER AND HELPER LOCOMOTIVES, AND FROM "FRONT" TO "REAR" ENGINES FOR CORRECT CAB PLACEMENT. All files needed to run these engines are included, no additional downloads are required.

Unzip WP2882s.zip to a temporary folder.

Move contents to ..\Train Simulator\ folder

Accept write overs if prompted, which will place a single engine consist for each locomotive in the Consists folder and
the Locomotive and crew car folders in the Trainset folder.

NOTES ON BUILDING CONSISTS WITH THE DIFFERENT ENGINE FILE TYPES SUPPLIED:

Included in this release are 3 types of locomotives to be used depending on their use as the lead or single engine in a consist, helper / pusher in a consist, or on an AI train. The sound files have been configured to achieve correct engine sounds for the locomotives in each of these cases, as long as the correct .eng file is used. The .eng files to use for these different applications is as follows:

Lead / single engine in Player consist: WP252f.eng, WP252r.eng, WP2882-CrewCar1, and WP252Tend.wag
Trailing Helper or Pusher in Player consist: WP252f.eng, WP252rhelp.eng, WP2882-CrewCar1, and WP252Tend.wag
AI consist in any position: WP252fAI.eng, WP252rAI.eng, WP2882-CrewCar1, and WP252Tend.wag

Engine Numbers 253, 257, or 260 may be substituted in the examples above, as well as CrewCar2, 3, or 4.

NOTE: Engine files which contain "xtra" in their names denote those engines which have the class lights turned on. Engine files without "xtra" in their names have the class lights turned off.

ALTERNATE SOUNDS AVAILABLE IN THE SOUND FOLDER:

Some of you may have a preference in whether or not
you want to always hear the open cylinder cock hiss
when you start the engines. I have provided two
versions of the .sms files so you can use the version
you prefer. In the sound folder are two other folders:

"Cyl Cock Hiss"

and

"No Cyl Cock Hiss"

The engines are originally installed using the .sms
files that have the cylinder cock hiss sound present.
If you want to try the models without the cylinder cock
hiss sound, simply copy the files from the
"No Cyl Cock Hiss" folder into the Sound folder.

If you want to have the cylinder cock hiss sound back again,
simply copy the files from the "Cyl Cock Hiss" folder into
the sound folder.

SPECIAL OPERATING NOTES:

These models have been built as true articulateds, with the front and rear engines being separate engines. For the model to load in the SIM, it is required that the front engine must have a cab view, which is where you'll begin when the SIM starts. HOWEVER, these engines will ONLY operate correctly when operated from the cab of the rear engine. To switch cabs to the rear engine:

1 - Apply the train brake
2 - Release the engine brake
3 - Press "F9" to bring up the consist window
4 - Click on the second engine back in the consist window (the "rear" engine ahead of the tender)
5 - Press "1"

You will now have the correct cabview that does not move with the front engine, and all engine sounds will function correctly.

*** Special Features ***

The smoke deflector on the stack is animated and can be operated at any time by pressing CTRL + Number Pad "8"

Providing my "I can do that" moment: Scott (scottb613 at elvastwer.com forums) and his "big dog - birth of a steam locomotive" series.

Inspiriation and Encouragement: All listed above and those at the elvastower.com forums, both in the thread of the construction of these models, and inspiration from other models I have admired.

Herb Kelsey for his help in reviewing technical details of the construction of the models, and refinements to the .eng and .wag file variables.

Dave Nelson and Philip Michlian for providing additional photos and information for the models.

Initial Testing and positive input: Herb Kelsey, Tim Muir, Mike Long, Philip Michlian, and Tom Werb.

Brandon Smith for providing the .sms concept and the majority of the sound files used.

Tom Werb for the use of his excellent "Tom's Crews" cab figures.

If I have forgotten anyone I humbly apologize but know that I appreciate all the advice and inspiration I've received. I also must mention that the vast amount of information available on the forums regarding modeling for MSTS has been invaluable. The success I've had in making these models would not have been possible without drawing on the experience of so many others that have blazed the trail before!

Thank you all and hope you enjoy these models!
