And… nothing. Nothing comes up in the Routes and Activities lists. It says «No Routes.» and «No Activities.» no matter which folder I click on.
Doesn’t get more basic than this. What am I doing wrong? Could someone give me a few tips?

Did you install MSTS? If you didn't you need to.

It will be a stand-alone simulator one day, though, and we're all waiting for that day to come.
It will be the ultimate in train simulators when it comes to life on its own.

(Oh, well, back to windowshopping for rail simulation software, then. )
There are many stand alone Freeware and Payware routes OpenRails can run without MSTS. The OR team is starting a project to identify them and provide a list on our web site.

Test it. The route would have to NOT use any items installed when MSTS is installed. That would eliminate any route that required the 6 defaullt routes. And it must be a route with activities and paths. (Assuming the Activities come with Consists.)
Would also have to be a route that the installer does not require Train.exe to be in the root folder.
Process to install a route on PC w/O MSTS:
Create this folder structure:
Root Folder = ORTS-Test
ORTS-Test>
ORTS-Test> Global
ORTS-Test> Global > Shapes
ORTS-Test> Global > Textures
ORTS-Test> Routes
ORTS-Test> Sound
ORTS-Test> Trains
ORTS-Test> Trains > Consists
ORTS-Test> Trains > Trainset
Install the route you want to test into the ORTS-Test> Routes folder. Install any Addon that the rout needs such as X-Tracks or Scail Rail. Install Rolling Stock (Note: This rolling stock cannot use any default MSTS "Global" Sounds.)
Most Payware routes should work. However many of them use default sounds from MSTS ver 1.0 that were installed into the "global" sound folder.
Once the above accompliished. Then run ORTS and point it to the ORTS-Test folder.
I just tested this procedure with the 3dTrains Feather River Route. Worked fine.
FYI a more detailed process is described here http://www.tweed.coa.../route-install/
