When will microtex.ace come back to Open Rails?

As a completely alternative line of thinking, .dds files can include bump maps. Might that serve just as well? .dds is native to .XNA so there is nothing mysterious there in enabling it.

microtex will be back when we have the time and resources to implement it (the previous implementation was undocumented and not understood).

The problem we have currently is that the lighting model is complicated enough that we can't add more feature and support all existing features on Shader Model 2 graphics cards. Something must give and that hasn't been decided yet. How well it is implemented is completely irrelevant right now.

We've made a decision now: new features will be SM3-only; the SM2 support will continue to exist but it will not get new features. That means microtex will almost certainly be SM3-only.

Yup, the OR team has Microtex working again (thank you James), including multiple Microtex files (a Mosaic enabled feature). I think we'd all be really surprised if it wasn't part of the next release.

These nice little surprises; scaring, yet thrilling, all at the same time.
