Other train sims make use of the mouse wheel and it is quite useful in saving keystrokes and increasing usability.

So here are a few suggestions:

1) Zoom in and out. (almost all camera keys could use this feature, even in the cab).
2) Move the car focus to the next or previous car. This is really handy when uncoupling cars.
3) In the cab, increase or decrease any control that has been selected.
4) Increase or decrease the intensity of precipitation.
5) Increase or decrease sound volume.
6) FOV (wide angle to telephoto).

These are just suggestions to augment usability and NOT replacements for current keyboard functions because I am sure there are many out there that may only use a laptop touchpad with no mouse wheel in sight!
