Pressing Alt-f4 seems to cause the program to suddenly stop. Repeatable on multiple routes, including the original MSTS routes.

Isn't Alt+F4 the universal Windows command to close a program?

Alt-F4 is the standard Windows "close this window" shortcut. It may be worth putting confirmation messages on it and Escape though as noted in another thread.
