Here are a pair of screenshots directly comparing MSTS and the newly released build of Open Rails on my system.
All settings are identical, I've reduced the size of the pix a bit:
No smoke on the OR shot (and there's a freight animation that's gone haywire, but that's hard to see from this angle), but on the plus side the frame rate is twice that of MSTS -- and the difference might well even be larger if OR wasn't locked at 60fps. Also I'm ecstatic about the support for the wide-angle monitor, and with very little (if any) distortion.
There are a few minor graphical things I like better in the MSTS shot -- the alpha along the ballast and the sharper grain on the terrtex. I also prefer the lighting and colour balance in the MSTS shot, which fits the "old postcard" look of my route, but these things may just be a matter of fine-tuning some settings.
I've noticed a few glitchy things regarding FreightAnims and forest objects, but all in all I think we already have a winner!

You mentioned something about being locked in at 60 FPS? I'm getting mid to high 60s with my trial runs.
I do agree about the subtleties of MSTS but notice how sharp OR is.
I'm unable to capture the 68s & 69s at present (I'm not fast enough. LOL), but here's a 63. I'm waiting for a 70, to be honest;

The .XNA framework generally locks the maximum fps to 60, which is the max refresh rate for most computer monitors. On occasion the fps in OR will go higher, but that's not the norm.
