I just jumped back into the sim after about 3 years of not having it installed. I decided to experiment with higher detail terrtex aces, and am now using 2048 size, which makes a pixel about 2.4" in size, good enough for a bit of detail! This is one of Jon Davis's Rayonier 2-8-2's that he sent me, and Tim's log cars, crossing the Copalis R.

The river, grass, ferns and salal are all just on the terrtex! I'm really pleased with the result, and haven't noticed a frame rate hit, running on a high end, but 5 year old computer.

Yup, that's a good shot. I like the terrtex also. It is now my desktop.

Hi Steve:

Very good to see you tinkering with MSTS again. Nice work, by the way!

Have you been keeping up with the progress of Open Rails? It really gives hope that we won't have to dump our hard work and switch to an entirely new non-compatible program!

Hi Andre!

Yes, I have been watching the progress and have dl'd it. I'll install tonight and play around. Did you see my post below, in the general modeling section on the latest insanity of mine, 4096 terrtex aces, they work just fine and look amazing. The only real catch is that they are so detailed that they are individual works of art. 1 pixel = about 1.4 inches. It will be interesting to see how they play out in OR!

Yes, I'm still working on the same area, just keep adding things to the terrtex aces. The grass and various litter are on one of the 4096 pixel aces, the river is on several 2048's. I now have 3 of the biggies and 7 of the smaller ones. Of course, the distant ones are just 512's.

The ScaleRail has a custom texture I made a while back, but adding surrounding ROW gravel and grass really makes it blend in!

I just keep looking at this and then comparing it to some of the screens I've kept of very early attempts, just after MSTS came out.

I don't know if I'll ever finish the Moclips route, but I've learned a lot from building it so far. Tim suggested I concentrate on a much smaller route, something I've been considering lately anyway. I suspect it will be a logging/mining line, with a 3-5 mile mainline and branches. There may be some narrow gauge, but ScaleRail looks so good that I'll probably do most of it in standard gauge. I like the idea of just super detailing the thing!
