Today the regularly scheduled southward freight on the First District (Ridgway-Rico), No. 9, is heavily taxed with Conoco tanks and the usual one engine operation got enhanced. C-16s 15, 10 and 6 are struggling up the 3+% grade with the manifest. Normally, we'd be in Ophir at 3:55 PM on a very padded and relaxed schedule but today it's 4:00 PM and we're just now hitting Butterfly. We really have to struggle to meet Mixed train No. 6 at Trout Lake at 4:45 PM!

The train struggles into Ophir, fighting for traction on the slippery rail as it crosses 45A, rounds the curve by the depot then blasts over 45B and on to the high line.

Ah the Ophir high line. Legends are made of stuff like this. Train 9 struggles over the bridges on this engineering marvel laid out by Chief Engineer C.W. Gibbs.

Full tonnage, wet rail and a scheduled meet to make. Drama in the San Juans! Yep, that second shot on 46B we're stalled!

Off the high line and charging up to Matterhorn and into "Otto's Puzzle," so named because Otto Mears was contracted to replace this track below Trout Lake dam after the dam break in 1911. Track between Matterhorn and Trout Lake was a little steeper and more crooked than any else on the line.

After train 6 passes we leave Trout Lake and head off to Lizard Head, where we'll cut off our helpers and run down into Rico.

As the train ducks into the snowsheds at Lizard Head, I'm ducking in at the tavern at Ophir. This storm's not letting up and the dirt roads are getting bad. Don't want to get my Model T stuck! See you next time!
