These cars are based on the National Steel Car 80 ton offset side hoppers ordered by Ontario Northland in 1946. There were 75 cars in the series, numbered 140100 to 140174. They were used in iron ore service from the Adams Mine near Dane, Ontario, to steel mills on the Great Lakes. Some were also used in coal service to Pittsburgh and Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, and Cleveland, Ohio. They were marked "RETURN TO CNR VIA BUFFALO FOR ORE LOADING DANE ONTARIO CANADA." They remained in service until the early 1970's when they were renumbered to the 2200 series and used in ballast service.
