Elvas Tower: Reading USRA 50-TON,40-FOOT SINGLE-SHEATHED BOXCAR #45853 - Elvas Tower

The United States Railway Administration took over the railroads in December 1917 in an
attempt to ease the freight car shortage. As part of the program it designed standard cars,
had them built and assigned them to the various railroads. 25,000 single
sheathed cars were built between 1918 and 1920 and assigned to 26 roads. Too late to aid in the war effort,
the design set a standard for the following decade.

Philadelphia & Reading received 1,000 cars from Bettendorf, Pullman and St. Louis Car Co.in 1919. In 1924 the railroad changed its name to Reading Co. and relettered the cars. Dimensional data was changed in the 1930's and simplified lettering applied in the early 1950's. 650 cars were still running in 1950, down to just 26 by 1959. The cars ran to the late 1950's.
