Bridgton & Saco River two-foot gauge Baldwin 2-4-4RT No. 6

Builder's #31827 55,650# Wt. 35" Drivers 11.5x14" Cylinders 180PSI 8,094# T.E. Vacuum brakes

The Bridgton & Saco River Railroad was a 21 mile-long two foot gauge common carrier built in 1882 and running between Bridgton Jct. on the Maine Central to Harrison, Maine, via Bridgton, Maine. It was abandoned in 1941.

The railroad had only eight locomotives over its lifetime, normally rostering only three or four at a time. No. 6 was built in 1907 and was a near copy of No. 5, a product of the Portland Company. B&SR No. 5, built in 1906, was the last engine Portland produced so when the B&SR wanted another engine, they took the Portland design to Baldwin. Since the master mechanics of the B&SR and the Sandy River were the Coswell Brothers, the Sandy River got a carbon copy of the 6 as their No. 16 - Quickly renumber 8 for the reorganized Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes RR.

No. 6 could steam! No. 6 could fly! And No. 6 could roll and pitch and oscillate. Her heavy weight combined with inside frames made her top heavy and not fun to ride. But she pulled the freight and steamed well doing it so too bad if the crews got seasick!

No. 6 was the first Baldwin owned by the B&SR and set the stage for future engine purchases from that company. After a long and busy life, the 6 was scrapped in 1938.

This model represents the 6 as it appeared in the 1920s, Largely Baldwin stock but now equipped with electric lights.
