SPOKANE PORTLAND AND SEATTLE 10000 SERIES BOXCAR
USRA Double-Sheathed Steel Underframe 40-ton XM
3D Model and Textures ©2006, Updated March of 2011, Tim Muir
SP&S Had 300 cars in the 10000 series, and were some of the longest-serving cars on the railroad. Authorized by the United States Railroad Administration during the equipment shortage emergency around the period of the Great War. By the time the cars were delivered, World War One was over but the railroad was committed to purchase them. The SP&S group were 40-foot,40-ton capacity, on Andrews trucks and builtt by Pacific Car and Foundry. #'s 10000-10179 were built in Renton, Washington, the rest at Portland, Oregon. All were delivered in 1919, starting in September.
These were the primary boxcars on the SP&S for 27 years, until the arrival in 1946, of the all-steel 11000's. 300 boxcars doesn't sound like enough to run a railroad that covered three states. The fact is the parent companies, Great Northern and Northern Pacific provided many of the cars to fulfill the interchange needs of the SP&S.
Official Railway Equipment Register Notes, cars in revenue service down through the years:
1922, 300 cars
1927, 300
1930, 300
1935, 298
1939, 296
1944, 293
1950, 279* 1952, 142 cars converted to 39000 series woodchip cars, for Crown Zellerbach Paper service, Camas, Washington.
1953, 128
1958, 43
1962, 22
1965, 15
1968, 4* four cars assigned to Dry Ice service from Gas Ice Corporation, at Klickitat Springs, on the Goldendale Branch.
1972, 0 remaining cars assigned to work service.
