Rio Grande Southern Wayne Bus Body Goose #5 & Express Trailer - Revision A - Nov 1, 2010
The RGS turned to Motor Cars in the 1930s to haul LCL Freight and Passengers more economically
than a locomotive-hauled train. Motor #5 was built in 1933 using a 1928 Pierce-Arrow Model 36
body, frame and parts. In 1946, Motor #5 was rebuilt with a Wayne Bus Body for additional passenger
capacity and a war-surplus GMC 6-Cylinder engine. In 1950, Express Trailer #5 was modified with
side windows, and passenger seating for tourist operations over the RGS
This model represents RGS Motor #5 and Trailer as it appeared from 1946 to 1950, with the
Wayne Bus Body and the original Express Body.
Drawings, photos and prototype information:
- "A Gaggle of Geese", Mallory Hope Ferrell, Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette, Benchmark Publications.
- "Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose #5", Mike Conder & Tim Mulina, BHI PUblications, 2003
- Bill Pratt, for the valuable detailed photos of RGS Goose #4 that he provided.
- Herb Kelsey, for history, period photos, technical details, and prototype conformance.
WAG file, realistic operating physics and sounds provided by Howard Saunders.
Testing, and detail reviews by Herb Kelsey, Howard Saunders, and Rick "The Grindre"
What I originally thought would be a quick 6-month project, turned into a 2-1/2 year ordeal
that I gave-up on twice. But, like the real RGS Geese. it kept reincarnating itself.
Hope you-all like it.
