By January, 1972 E34ACDB was reduced to E34ACB. By December E34C, worn out, was scrapped. E34AB worked helper duty, locals and work trains until 1973, when a lightning strike on Pipestone Pass promply ended their careers. They were scrapped in August of 1974. Richard Steinheimer calls the E34 the most photographed boxcab set.
