Hi, my name is Herb and I'm an Open Rails addict. :lol:

My computer was slowing down a bit so I went looking for caches of files that may or may not need to be on my drives. Turns out my beloved Open Rails is quite a bit of the problem! I have 28,315 items in my Open Rails sub-folder ( Users/username/AppData/Roaming/Open Rails) in four folders for a whopping 45.3 GB of data. Yeah, I build a lot of activities and run a lot of trains!

So, my question is, how do I dump about 90% of these files without blowing out OR? I figure I can successfully remove old files just by sorting them all for dates and delete anything over 6 months old or so. Most anything older than that won't run anyway 'cuz I'm constantly changing stuff. But what of the cache and load cache folders?

Hello.
I guess, that's temporary files.
As I understand that, user / app data / roaming area keeps your settings, for them to be applicable after openrails core upgrade/change/reinstallation.
Saves contain *.png screenshots, all issued commands... Also, if logging was turned on in menu, data about performance in every ride was stored too.
Engmod have wared me to turn that option off (in case I'm not testing something), because it floods disc space.
I could mess something, but I believe, our mates will correct and add something more.

I often check out that ...cache\loadcache and deleted anything there that is older than 4 months (figuring if it is that old I'm never getting back to it anyway). YMMV about the age. Similar issue with Open Rails Logs (I've used a symbolic link to put those in an easy-to-access location so I don't recall where they originally lived.

It's never caused me any headaches so I suppose it is safe to do.

Routine for me to delete those files -- sorting for age -- about every six months to a year. I have experienced no problems. I think OR should have a clean cache routine available to the user...with the ability to age sort. There is nothing in the manual about this, I suppose it would be good to mention it.

The only time you need anything in there is when you are resuming from saves.

If you finish an activity, and saved what you need ( I keep copies of all log files in zip files for bug chasing ) you can delete everything in that folder.

No, your settings are kept with the program.

I run 4 different versions, 1.4, 15rc1, unstable, ORNYMG, and I have ini files for each of them as I am constantly checking different settings.
