It's probably just the way my own body works but I've found that when I'm really sick a long soak in a hot bath feels really good, it's quiet, very relaxing, it opens up the arterial system, and the high humidity helps me breathe. But not too long or too hot if you are running a fever.

In case of weakness, or other reasons, when putting the whole body to bath is unwanted:
My mom's version: to put either feet or arms (below elbows) to water of body temperature and add incrementally small amounts of hot water, until whole volume around your body gains ~40oC. Hold 5-10 minutes (depends on Your comfort feeling), wipe to dry and go to bed.

Others sometimes recommend to put on wool socks after procedure.

Your hands have the highest concentration of capillaries in your skin. 10 minutes immersed in hot water will increase your blood flow (20 minutes is better) and add to body temperature. You can get the same results by placing an electric blanket against the skin on the back of your legs and inner thigh right below the buttocks. There are large arteries there close to the surface that pick up that heat and carry it around your body. You can feel it in your feet in a few seconds. Exhausted athletes who do the same water trick with icy cold water lower drop the temperature of their overheated bodies and quickly restore stamina.

The water, I think, has those benefits, that it surrounds body's parts, is being more consistent with temperature, washes-out salts and toxins, excreted with sweat, cleaning skin and facilitating it's breathe.

You've just gave me another idea's understanding: raising the temperature is very energy-consuming action for organism, very big stress. Therefore, if we help in this, using external heat, the result will be achieved quicker and much easier. (less suffering, less energy losses)
Higher' than normal temperature suppresses pathogen's activity and signals to all organism to produce interferons.

Yup. And your Mom was right too: hands for quick heat, feet because they're most likely to be coldest, ideally both.

Yes, Dave.
Sometimes it's simpler, easier and quicker, than a whole bath.
Water alone is mild and safer, than extremal "additions", like alcohol, pepper, etc. which are strong and their influence would be unpredictable in every individual case.

She also advised, how to decide, when to end that "procedure" - since the skin on feet will turn saturated-rose: "see the socks" - if you are tired and don't enjoy with long sitting that way, because longer exposing of feet or hands won't bring any significant-better effect.

I'm pretty much over it now, so should be catching up with email etc. very shortly.

Just wanted to say a big thanks for all the encouraging posts here. When you're unwell, it's great to feel that people care and you're being missed.
