Hi.

I was wondering if there was interest in a new editor tool for 2D cab views. While I'm all for ORTS' added functionality of 3D cab views, there are over a million pre-existing MSTS and ORTS locomotives equipped with traditional 2D cab views. The old Cab Editor from the MSTS Editors & Tools has become obsolete and the old MSTS Editors & Tools are a pain in the butt to get working properly on modern operating systems.

Although one could theoretically edit the .cvf file with a text editor like PSPad, I'd like to actually see what I'm doing in the cab--especially making sure the controls and gauges are in proper registration relative to the cab background image.

Does anyone agree?

Сertainly, there are two kind of pains:
First, but less serious: after every change by text editor, I ought to launch simulation and see, how it looks: satisfactory, or no.
Second, and more important: we need at list an actual manual, describing ALL ORTS(MSTS) CVF-file parameters and right syntax.
But better would be a simple editor, allowing visualize the cab, being edited and automatize right syntax writing for not so advanced ones.
Like timetable editor provides graphical interface to define (chose from list) train parameters and commands, and writes proper data infile for the user.
More significant instance would be path editor: it's doubtful, to easy write path-file by hands, not seeing track map :)

So, I join to your ask.

This would really save a lot of work, as for now there is only the trial and error method.

To position the controls, a version of the 2D cockpit reduced to 640 x 480 pixels is used with the "Information" tab of Photoshop to know the approximate location of the controls and from there, use a Path with very little detail that opens quickly in the simulator to be able to place the elements accurately.

But all this wastes a lot of time...

I would certainly love to see this happen! Creating 2D cabs by switching between Photoshop, cvf editor, TGA Tools and ORTS for every single change in position and/or addition of a new element does require a huge amount of time.
