According to John H. White's book American Locomotives the cutoff on the particular valve gear valve gear Winans designed for these engines caused an intermittent exhaust, At first I thought this might sound similar to an articulated locomotive with two exhaust strokes. For a reason I cannot recall I decided on a three cylinder engine instead and used the sounds from a Union Pacific 9000 series.
Not sure if it's anywhere near correct, and the locomotive travel MUCH too fast (camels couldn't keep up steam past 15 mph) but I like the way it sounds. Call it artistic license, especially since there are no recordings of the beasties at work.

There is nothing wrong with artistic license.
Without it we would have nothing available in V scale. Or HO or G, ect.
Compromise is why we're still a species.
